As we are celebrating our Platinum anniversary this year, our Spring brochure is a mixture of both great deals and editorial. Part of that brochure includes an interview with Glasswells Managing Director Paul Glasswell, shown below with members of the family.
Our aims & values have always been about huge choice, value & competative pricing. I think we have had amazing loyalty – both from staff & customers. A great deal of credit must go to our team who always go above & beyond to understand our customers’ needs.
In the early 1990s, we could see shopping habits were changing and so we wanted to respond to that. Shoppers wanted more choice & we knew that to offer 50 suites rather than 10, we had to look for a big store which would enable us to showcase our products in an environment that was akin to a customer’s home. We are delighted with the success of the Newmarket Road store, and we are continually looking to make improvements to further add to the customer experience. An extension to The Place To Eat restaurant & refurbishments to the interior are planned for later this year.
Opening the Ranelagh Road store in Ipswich was our biggest development over the last 10 year. We had built up a loyal customer base at Martlesham Heath, but we wanted to expand & move into the town centre. Our Bury & Ipswich outlets have their individual styles, but they share similar values & the same goal to ensure high quality products, choice, & a personal service.
When we first started, we were the new kids on the block to the more established furniture stores. This meant we had to work very hard to make our name. Through the furniture exhibitions & our shops, Glasswells soon became a name you could trust. We have always prided ourselves on this reputation, the fact we are family-run, & we are local. I would like to thank all our staff & our customers who have contributed to our success over the last 70 years, and look forward to many more years to come.
“We are delighted at Glasswells to celebrate our 70th anniversary. 1946 was the year my grandfather founded the business in a small shop on Brentgovel Street, which progressed steadily with principles of great service and value for money. We are now Suffolk’s largest home furnishing store, with extensive properties in both Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. We are proud to employ over 280 staff and we operate in a very diverse business, including contract flooring and interiors, commercial storage and catering, as well as our shops.
Glasswells’ success is very much down to the support that we have received from the people of Suffolk and I am very pleased to have been able to supply furniture to our customers, their children and grandchildren over the years. As we’ve grown larger over the years we’ve tried very hard not to lose the personal touch, we do stress with all our staff how important it is to put the customer first and we hope that our extended business and large buying power that we have achieved, leads through to lower prices for the quality furnishings we offer our customers.”
