Glasswells Ipswich 10th Anniversary

Glasswells has come a long way from its beginnings over 70 years ago, supplying second-hand furniture. Today, we are the largest home department store in East Anglia, and firmly established as one of the region’s best-loved and most respected family-run businesses. In October, Glasswells is proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our modern store in Ranelagh Road, Ipswich.

Family tradition has been at the core of the our ethos since the family opened its first store in 1946, and the same values remain today: high-quality products, lots of choice, hard work and always putting the customer first.

We have always prided ourselves on our reputation, the fact we are family-run and that we are local,” said Paul Glasswell. “We’ve worked extremely hard to provide exceptional service and a unique shopping experience, and this has hard work stood us in good stead.

Back in 2007, at a time when most businesses were tightening their belts, we pushed forward with plans for growth. Twelve years of successful trading in Martlesham Heath together with success in Bury St Edmunds convinced the family that the time was right to open a new flagship store for homes and shoppers in the east of the county. When premises on the Ranelagh Road retail park came up for sale, we decided this was the place to put down fresh roots.

A huge investment followed: £5m in developing the tired and dated 1970s building, creating an attractive landmark building with a stunning glass frontage, and extended the premises over two floors to offer the biggest one-stop furnishing shop in the area. The new store created 70 jobs in the town and many of those individuals that were involved in the grand opening 10 years ago are still working there today.

Every element that makes a home can be found under one roof, staffed by  our experienced workforce who embrace the personal touch and customer care that has made us a name you can trust. A huge choice of furniture is on display for our customers to see, touch and try out, representing value for money and quality products that are built to last.

More than just a furniture store, customers can browse an extensive flooring and carpet-fitting department, bespoke curtain and blind-making service, linens, lighting, cookware, gifts and all those finishing touches that really help to make your house a home. There is a professional interior designer for those bigger jobs and a commercial division specialising in the supply and installation of contract flooring and furnishings to businesses across the region.

The spacious in-house Place to Eat restaurant offers a range of sumptuous traditional and freshly prepared meals, boasting the best in local produce. We have proved a popular pit-stop for customers needing a break from shopping!

Looking back not just over the past ten years of Glasswell’s in Ipswich but over the long history of the business, Paul attributes its success to more than one factor.

I think we have had amazing loyalty – both from staff and customers,” he said. “A great deal of credit must go to our team who always go above and beyond to understand our customers’ needs. And of course, the products, which we select to offer fantastic value and quality to our customers. There’s a huge choice to browse in store or online; we have everything you need for your home under one roof.

Last year, the store was fully refurbished in preparation for its big 10th birthday celebrations, which are planned for the weekend of October 20-21. Paul Glasswell and the team cordially invite everyone to join them. “All are welcome to join us for the event; there will be entertainers, competitions and some special one-off birthday promotions,” he said. “Celebrating our tenth anniversary in Ipswich is a significant milestone and an achievement of which we are all very proud,” said Paul. “It’s a beautiful, modern, spacious store, a million miles away from the corner shop my grandfather opened all those years ago!
